I've been thinking a lot about goals and a business plan for 2016. I almost posted a blog early this morning about just that. I decided to wait and went to my only Networking group that is active this week. And guess what our topic was? You guessed it, 2016 Goals!
I've found it a little difficult for me to set up goals, as I don't have anything to measure against at this point, being that I'm at a new job. While, I still sell insurance and network, I have new responsibilities that I didn't have at my last job.
Here's what I learned this morning. We need think about setting goals in a completely different way. Instead of just focusing on monetary goals, you need to think about what you want your life to look like in the new year. Picture it. Make a vision board if you're a visual person. If we set our goals by starting with what we want in our life, it makes it easier to work our way backwards to what we need to do to get there. Sometimes, working more isn't what you want. Maybe you want to spend more time with your family, then you need to figure out a way to make that happen. What do you need to do to give yourself the ability to work less? If you want to buy a car, take a trip or pay off debt, you need to figure out what amount you need to make to make those things happen. Then, figure out how many sales you need to make to get there. It's easiest if you add up the sales you had this year and figure out your average. Once you've figured that out. Figure out what your closing ratio is. Again it's easier if you look at your numbers from this past year. If it's 70% for example, and you need to make 100 sales, then you need to have the opportunity to sell, quote or talk to approximately 144 people. Take the 144 and divide it by 12 (months) and you come up with 12. Divide that by 4 (weeks) and you come up with 3. Making three per week seems relatively easy. However, keep in mind that you will need to make up for your vacation time by having a few extra in other weeks.
So now, sit down and figure out what you want your life to look like in 2016? What are your personal goals? Because in the end, everything we do in business should be about making our personal lives better. We work to live, not live to work.
