Getting back into the swing of things after vacation(s)

Sunday, July 10th, 2016

I thought a good topic to post today would be "Getting back into the swing of things after vacation(s). It felt like I was pretty much on vacation for most of the month of June. I went to Paris with my daughter for 10 days, and then after being back to work for 4 days, I went to the Bahama's with my husband for a week to celebrate our anniversary.

I've been back to work a full week now and finally feel all caught up as far as office work goes. I didn't work at all while in Paris, but I took my computer on my second trip so that I could issue policies and work on quotes when time permitted.

I have found that the time away was good for me because it gave me time to think about the processes I use and the way things should work. Things that I think about all the time, but don't really have the time to dwell on and follow through. One example, I really thought about how I find myself doing too many things at once and how I want/need to change that. This past week I had a much easier time when it came to focusing on one task at a time. Something I've talked about in prior posts, but never put the effort into action. With my job, it's always going to be easy to get distracted by unexpected visitors or phone calls. However, for the most part I am able to focus on getting one thing done at a time. This was a huge breakthrough for me.

I've also been using time blocks to get things done. Here's what I'm doing. I look at the clock and say to myself "Ok, you have 55 minutes to work on this and then you need to take a walk." I feel so much better and it actually helped me to get a lot done quickly.

Another thing I found out after being away for that amount of time is that all of my organization methods are working. I really didn't have a mess when I came back. Everything was organized so that I just had to sit down and process each client's policies, whether it was changes to current policies, new business I had issued while away, or quoting.

And finally, networking. It was great getting back out to my networking groups last week. Everyone was happy to see me and hear about my trips. I was happy to catch up with what everyone's been doing. Sometimes you get so busy running around to all of these meetings that you start to feel burned out. A break was definitely needed. I feel re-charged and ready to jump back into whatever comes my way.

I leave you with this quote for today. It's one of my favorites!

Building Self-Discipline; Step 1

So how do we build self-discipline? First we figure out where we need self-discipline in our life. What are the areas in your life that you are struggling with? These are usually things you want to do, but for some reason you don't do them. Here are some ideas. Exercising, cooking meals, laundry, networking, de-cluttering, organizing your desk at work, yoga, meditation... the list could go on and on. Think about your list for a minute. Now, write down 2 or 3 things that you know you want to do, but keep putting off. These are things that you know would make an impact in your life. Now, next to each item, write down why you're not doing them AND why you want to do them. # selfdiscipline # lifehack # gettingstuffdone # liveyourbestlife  #jimrohnquote MW Copyright 2017

The Ins and Outs of Networking

I thought I'd talk about networking for those who are just starting out in their networking journey. And maybe, just maybe, someone who's a pro, will learn something or get a new idea. When you start out on your journey of networking, you're not sure what you're going to find. If you're like me, you're a little intimidated by everyone. They all seem so put together, so confident. It feels like everyone knows everyone else and you don't know anyone! You might sit there thinking "What the heck am I doing here?" But guess what? What you're feeling is 100% normal. And guess what else? We all felt the same way when we started networking. Because I'm one of those people who remembers feeling that way, I make it a point to go out of my way to talk to newbies, show them around, introduce them to others, give them networking advice. It's funny because the very first networking group I ever attended is the one that I'm currently the

How would self discipline benefit you?

Picture your life a year from now if you actually accomplished the things on your list. How would this benefit your life? Seriously, just stop, close your eyes and imagine a year from now. For the past year you have ______. (Fill in the blank with something from your list.) # selfdiscipline # livingyourbestlife # lovingyourlife # happiness # workhard # besuccessful
